CHANDLER, Ariz. Beginning today, the City will provide free tax
preparation services at two Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) sites in an effort to help low- and moderate-income residents claim
up to $4,800 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC).

A VITA site at the First Credit Union located at 25 S. Arizona Place will
offer services from 5-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on
Saturdays.

A second VITA site will be located at the Chandler Community Services of
Arizona (CSA) office, 650 N. Arizona Avenue. Free tax assistance will be
available from 8 a.m-5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
and from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Appointments are
required by calling 480-963-4321.

Chandler VITA sites help further the City’s efforts to help low-income taxpayers file the forms
necessary to receive EITC credit that goes unclaimed by thousands of people each year.
Volunteers with Chandler VITA program assisted 645 families with their tax returns last
year, and helped them claim over $610,000 in refunds.

Persons seeking tax assistance should bring the following documents with
them to the VITA tax preparation site:
W-2 forms from every employer for whom they worked in 2008, Form 1099 (if applicable), Social
Security cards (including those of all dependents), photo identification, a copy of last
Year’s tax return and information for all deductions and credits.

The EITC credit can be used to pay or offset tax owed, or to receive a refund when no tax is owed. To receive this money, individuals must file a federal income tax return, even if their income is below the filing requirement. Families must have earned less than $41,646 in 2008 to qualify.

Watering Reminder

December and January are our coldest months, and plant water usage is at its lowest point. Keep in mind that too much water on plants encourages lush, active growth that is more prone to frost damage. Plants that are dehydrated or water stressed also incur more damage. Recommendations below are for plants that are established in the landscape (in the ground about 2 years).

Lawn watering:
Summer grass (Bermuda) - once every 30 days
Overseeded cool season grass (rye) - once every 14 days
If trees and shrubs are on the same valve:
Desert Adapted - once every 35 days
High Water Use - once every 18 days
Tree watering:
Desert Adapted - once every 45 days
High Water Use - once every 21 days
Shrub watering:
Desert Adapted - once every 30 days
High Water Use - once every 14 days
Groundcover and vine watering:
Desert Adapted - once every 28 days
High Water Use - once every 14 days
Cacti and succulent watering - if needed
Annuals watering - once every 10 days
Wildflower watering - once every 15 days

Reduce your landscape watering 30 to 50 percent by adjusting your irrigation each season. Landscape Watering by the Numbers: A Guide for the Arizona Desert will help you determine how much water to apply and how long to run your system.
